If you have been considering a new business telephone system it is likely that you have been hearing a lot about VOIP.  The commonly asked question is; what is VOIP or Voice over IP?

VOIP stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol.  Voice is a term referring to telephone service or speaking over a specific medium.  In the case of VOIP the medium is the data wiring or it could be using a wireless network.  You may be using a Voice over IP business phone system but your conversations can still be going over normal telephone lines.  The Internet Protocol is describing the fact that your telephone system is residing on your computer or data network. The voice conversations along with the data your telephone system is pushing over that network whether wired or wireless is accomplished with a standard or format called Voice Over Internet Protocol.  The key to high quality VOIP is bandwidth and prioritization.

Make sure your provider has analyzed your network and has assured or guaranteed that you have enough bandwidth on your network to allow voice traffic to come and go with priority over the data that is riding on that same network.  If it doesn’t you will have bad voice quality on what might otherwise be a great business phone system.  More information about VOIP, business telephone systems, unified communications, IP phone systems, IP PBX’s, mobility and more can be found here.
